Idea development Part 1 - Puzzles and fun

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

So my first assignment for week 2 was four riddles that I had to solve in a creative way and I had a lot of fun doing it. I was allowed to ask for help, but wanted to try and give them a go on my own before asking my boyfriend about his ideas.

Puzzle 1

A man is replacing a wheel on his car, when he accidentally drops the four nuts used to hold the wheel on the car. They fall into a deep drain, irretrievably lost. A passing girl offers him a solution that enables him to drive home. What is it?

So there might be a few possible ways to resolve this.

  1. First it's not mentioned if the passing girl was in a car of her own, so lets assume she was. She could either drive him to the closest workshop, so he could buy a new set of nuts or offer to go and buy them herself and drive back to him.

  2. Another solution is to call a toll car that could pick up his car and drive him home with it.

  3. Third option is rather dangerous, but it could help him with a temporary solution. And that is to take one nut from the other 3 wheels and use them on the fourth wheel, so he could drive himself home.

  4. Fourth option is that the girl herself was a car mechanic that had spare nuts in her car or had a toll car that could take him and his car home.

Puzzle 2

Two Russians walk down a street in Moscow. One Russian is the father of the other Russian’s son. How are they related?

  1. The first Russian is married to the second and they are the parents of the child.

  2. The first Russian might be an adoptive parent of the second Russian's son.

Puzzle 3

What occurs once in June, once in July and twice in August?

1. And that would be the letter 'U'

Puzzle 4

Six drinking glasses stand in a row, with the first three full of water and the next three empty. By handling and moving only one glass at a time, how can you arrange the six glasses so that no full glass stands next to another full glass, and no empty glass stands next to another empty glass? What is the minimum number of moves to solve this puzzle?

  1. One move is enough to solve this puzzle. If you pour the water from cup number 2 to cup number 5, there won't be any full and empty cups next to another of the same kind.
