Design a 5-page website or blog to promote your hometown (or any other place if you so choose). Present your design along with a strategy that explains the decisions you’ve made during the design process (keep the six steps mentioned in the lesson Web Design Process: Designing for Web (part 2) in mind).
Remember, it’s important for us to see how you think, so explain why you decided to do things the way you did. This is a front-end design lesson task. No coding or publishing is needed. Please upload this task to your WordPress blog.
For this task I had to create a 5 page website layout about my hometown.
I started the whole process by listing out my ideas and keywords on a peace of paper.
I planned the different sections/pages and what would they contain. I also thought about the color palette and fonts I want to use. I then made a sheet with the six steps mentioned in the lesson Web Design Process: Designing for Web (part 2).
Color palette: I chose to create the website with dark blue and grey colors. I picked the blue, because I wanted the site to feel friendly, reliable and inspiring.
Fonts: I used "Impact" for the titles to make the page feel solid and exciting and "Mongoose" for the paragraphs and navigation menu, since this font was very compact, but still easy to read.
Shapes: I used mainly round shapes for the photos, with the intention to further make the site look friendly and represent connection and community.
1. Home page:
The home page consists of a big panoramic image of the mountains around the city and a welcome greeting aiming to impress and welcome the viewer to the website. On the bottom I included news from the city that will make the viewer more curious and willing to explore the possibilities that this place has to offer. The navigation bar is clean and easy to understand, I also included a "search" option, so that viewers can get the desired information on the moment.
2. Activities page:
I wanted to include as many activities as possible, so that the viewer can become more interested in spending time at this location. The photos are friend and family oriented while still trying to portray the sense for adventure and exploration, making the place more fun and tempting.
3. Attractions page:
Since the city of Fla is rather small, there aren't many human-made attractions to see, but I still included the ones that exist for the convenience of the viewer as well as for the website aiming to be honest and reliable. I included links to websites of the different places, so the viewer can obtain needed information as fast as possible.
4. Food and Drink page:
For people traveling to and through the city food and drinks are one of the most important things to look for, therefore I included the top restaurants and the most important information about them on a dedicated page.
5. Hotels page:
Unfortunately there are not that many places allowing people to stay overnight at the city, but that gave me the opportunity to include more photos of the places that do exist.
6. About Fla page:
On the last page I wanted to write down some curious information about the location and history of the city. I also included the banner and the story behind it as extra information. On this page I also decided to leave the map edges sharp in order to fit the banner more as well as have a more serious feel in general.
- Overall I tried to follow the same design all over the pages and show as much information about the different possibilities as I could without making the website crowded and hard to navigate.
