Lesson Task - Expressing Meaning

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

Question 1

"Create a new word; one which has no dictionary definition and a meaning that only you know. For example, the word we came up with is “roleean”, it doesn’t appear in the dictionary, but it means, “round and leaning to the left”. You could decide on your own word with its own meaning. With regard to our new word “roleean”, this might involve emphasizing or dramatically enlarging the letter “o” within the word, and using italics, allowing the letter to lean to the side."

This task was very hard. Making up a new word that doesn't sound stupid when told out loud was not easy, but I came up with a few words and chose the best sounding one. You know that time in early spring when you can't tell if it's actually spring? When it's still cold and there is snow on the ground, but it doesn't quite feel like winter? Weather is starting to warm up, snow is slowly melting... well I made a word for that exact period - Springter. Yes, you guessed it, it's a combination of Spring and Winter.

Spring I associate with tree blossoms and flowers, while winter is snowy and icy. I wanted to include both aspects in my illustration, so i started with sketching up a few different ideas.

Question 2

"Now choose two extra words from the list below:

  • Fluffy

  • Falling (?) (See at the bottom of the post)

  • Slimy

  • Agony

  • Sailing

  • Rock-Solid

  • Loading

  • Pizzaz

  • Accelerate

  • Elevate

  • Create (?)

  • Inspect

Create three different compositions, showcasing your three words, one word per composition. In each composition, arrange each individual word to express its meaning, using only the colours black and white. Consider all and any means at your disposal: dramatic scale contrasts, cutting, repetition, letter spacing, etc. Each composition should fit onto an A4 format. You can play with the size, spacing, placement and orientation of letters while being cognisant of how the word(s) interact with the entire format. Consider the entire format as an important design element: use all available space; don’t simply centre the word – think of this as an opportunity engage the viewer throughout the entire layout. Experiment. Play. Push to the edges of the page. Repeat elements if it helps to get the meaning across. Choose a very simple creative solution, if you find this direction more appropriate. Make sure to only use one typeface for each composition, noting the suitability of the choice of typeface to the individual word; you can experiment with various styles (light, bold, condensed, uppercase, lowercase). You may repeat, omit, slice, block or overlap words or letters. However, please do not use drop shadows or similar computer-generated effects."

For this task I chose the words Elevate and Create. I sketched a few ideas for both of them, trying out different options and styles. Since "Elevate" came up a bit simple, I wanted to go a bit wild on the "Create" and replace some of the letters with icons that represent tools for creating different stuff. First I tried with pens, but it still looked way too simple, so I went a bit deeper on the tools. The word still had to be readable, so I tried to include a few of the letters as guides. (Edited) I had to change the concept, because it did not meed the requirements for the task according to my teacher. Since creation and new ideas are very closely related I came up with the idea to shape the word like a light bulb and decorate to further indicate my intention.

Question 3

"You will need to supply all your preliminary sketches and ideas along with the final layouts – the foundational process of drawing by hand is important. You can start your project and explore ideas by tracing letters, cutting and pasting computer-generated words, photocopying or photographing; be inventive. Later, once your ideas are developed, you can use a program such as InDesign or Illustrator to rework and refine the design. Take time to consider the various options; don’t just do the first thing that pops into your mind. Explore all possibilities for enhancing your ideas."

I went "shopping" for vector illustrations on www.freepick.com (I did create a premium account on that page, since I'm happy with what they have and wanted to pay the artists for their hard work.) I picked up different tool illustrations, flowers, and snow samples. First thing I made was the "Elevate" word, I tried different compositions from my sketches and stuck with one which I feel represents the word in the best way possible and it feels up the page nicely. I chose a typeface (Britannic Bold) that was a bit sharp and resembles stairs or even an elevator.

After this one I went onto the harder one - "Create". I had to play and experiment with the different tools and some I had to create on my own. I tried my best to give enough clues on the word by putting some of the letters in it. I used different typefaces, that I thought matched the situation best. My boyfriend had a really hard time figuring out witch word it was, but once I told him it was easier to see. :D I also had to rotate the page, so the illustration was bigger and easy to see. (Edited) For my new idea I found a vector illustration of a light bulb and traced it with the pen tool to copy the shape. I then used "Corporate Regular" typeface to create the letters, although they are highly distorted from me trying to shape them into a light bulb. I then finished with clearing up most of the original shape and adding some decorations for easy understanding. (This time it was approved) I will include both of my old and new one, so my readers know what to do and "not do". :D

Last I had to represent my own creation of a word - Springter. I made sure to have enough flower and snow vectors for my project. I started up with putting each letter in a different layer, so it's easy to work on and worked on each one separately. Since I was going to use flowers I chose the "Centaur" typeface, which I like a lot, and I think it gives it an elegant and almost fairytail look. I worked on each letter for quite some time, making sure they look nice and realistic. I decided to make the first and last letters bigger for better balance and easy flow. The vector flowers I used have a lot of detail, so I decided to rotate this page as well.

Since I'm not sure my illustration for "Create" is working out, I decided to make one more word, just to be on the safe side and have all 3 required for this task. I did not do any sketches on this one, since it's a pretty easy to express. I did all in Adobe Illustrator and it took me only a few minutes. :D The word is "Falling" and my concept is that the "F" pushed all the other letters down and they are falling.

The evil "F"'s face haha. Overall this task was very challenging, but definitely worth it. It gives me a lot of new ideas for my future projects and it's good practice for my brain. :D
