Last lesson task for this week is:
Design a poster for a band’s gig. The band is called: “The Keystrokes.” You can decide the name of the band’s tour and remember to include a date, a time and a venue. You can use a visuals and/or typography to design the poster and remember to make the type work with the rest of the design. Show us your type skills in this one. Use an A3 format at 297 x 420mm.
Expand your design to include a pamphlet that outlines dates and further details of the tour i.e. merchandise available: T-shirts, caps and CDs or a promotion – Free drink on arrival. Remember this design must be consistent with your poster design. The pamphlet can be any size or format. Have a look online for inspiration.
I'll be honest with you, I started planning this task as soon as I saw my classmates that are full time get it. I was too excited to work on this poster, so I started coming up with ideas for it way before we got the task. Out of curiosity I looked at the older student blogs and wanted to try and do something they didn't do. I tried to think of different concepts and ideas, but it was mostly one that was stuck in my mind, so I decided to go with it. My idea was to illustrate the band's silhouettes in their concert night, standing in front of a big window and looking in to the city landscape outside, thinking about the exciting night they are about to have. The window would also happen to be in the shape of piano keys, while the silhouettes would serve as the black keys in between.
I thought about different time possibilities and band styles, but since the city landscape was a big part of the illustration, I decided to make the whole event very futuristic, with bright neon lights and colors.
Inspirations:
I was very excited to move to Adobe Illustrator and try to make my vision alive. I gathered a bunch of inspirational illustrations, photos, vector silhouettes, city landscapes and color palettes. I started with the window, I had to try a few different illustrations as background to find the best fitting one, I also made a grid of squares that would be my window mask on the background. I also traced the silhouettes and placed them roughly where they should be. I didn't save too much of my work back then, unfortunately but I have this one which was my first attempt.
It got scraped pretty fast as the background was a bit too bright for my taste. I also started to think about suitable font for the band name and how to further fill up the poster. I also decided to make a reflection of the people on the floor to make it a bit more glamorous and classy. I figured the two girls in the middle would be the lead singers and the people around them - the rest of the band. (drums, guitar ect.)
My next attempt was a bit more successful, but I screwed up hard and did not save it properly. In the end I had it only as a jpeg and that was impossible to work with any further. I also felt that it was a bit too busy and crowded. I wanted to clear it up a little and then realized my mistake, so there was nothing I can do. Another thing I wanted to change was the lettering on the band name, it felt too ordinary and generic. So with the new experience and knowledge, I decided to start over and try to work on the changes I wanted to make. I also felt in love with the neon outer glow effect, although I didn't really like it before. :D For the text I decided to include the date and place for the first starting concert for the band and of course - their website.
On the next day, early morning (which seems like is my most creative period), I decided to play with the title and make it more unique. I tried a few different typefaces and in the end I picked the "Terminator two" typeface (fitting name for my futuristic theme too haha).
I custom fitted the letters to make the look and even managed to sneak in a key shape in there.
I like the "banner-like" shape and the different "THE" that fits in there like a glove.
After I was happy with the title I went on trying to replicate my failed illustration and make a more clean look for the poster. I used "Terminator two", "Agency FB", "Autumn regular" and "Bauhaus 93" typefaces for the text under.
After that was looking decent I tried sketching up the rest of the assignment, which was to create a pamphlet that outlines dates and further details of the tour.
My first idea was to have a close up of the silhouettes on the city background, but it didn't look so good on illustrator, so I did something more simple instead.
Finally for the last page I wanted to include the merch the band will offer, so I played a little with some t shirt, hat and CD mockups to finish the last page of the pamphlet.
And the result:
And a poster mockup in a not so futuristic city. :)
