Lesson Task – Color Theory - Book cover

  • Design a book cover for one of the following: a.) “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin: use complementary colors to express anguish and uncertainty. b.) “Animal Farm” by George Orwell: use analogous colors with a contrasting accent to express disagreement and discontent. c.) “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett: use secondary colors to express naivety, honesty and harmony.

  • The book cover must contain the title and the author’s name.

  • You must clearly make use of color to express the desired effects.

For this task I chose to work with “Rosemary’s Baby” by Ira Levin.

I watched the Rosemary's Baby (1968) movie to get an idea for the theme of the book. For the complementary colors I felt like shades and tints of green and red fit best with the theme, so this was my palette:

I didn't do any sketching for this book cover, but I wanted to experiment with different styles and techniques, using both photos and illustrations. I ended up with quite a few good results.

Illustrations RGB and CMYK

For the second one although I liked how clean and simple it is, I was a bit disappointed to see that the green was almost completely lost on the CMYK version.

I then decided to try to recreate some of my newly learned color effects skills with photos.

I found some fitting photos on a stock site (none of them are mine) and decided to try a split toning effect, using red and green.

Original photo and book cover:

I love how it turned out, but sadly the model on the photo did not look the same as the actress in the movie, so I had to sadly discard this as my final cover. I tried applying the same effect on some baby photos (It was quite fun turning cute babies to demon looking creatures, haha), but in the end I did not find a fitting one. After figuring out that I most likely won't be able to find a photo with a woman that looks like the actress or a fitting baby, I decided to try something more abstract. I combined two different photos in Photoshop to create my final book cover:

Final result: RGB and CMYK

If I were to print this cover I'd definitely work more on the CMYK version and boost the green more, so it's more visible.

I also fitted all of my book cover in to a book mockup:
