Brief
Ask two friends or family members to pick a nice-looking website at random. Study the website and answer these questions:
What type of website are we looking at?
Which industry is this website in?
What is its purpose?
Which different types of content are used?
How is the content presented?
Pay attention to how the website looks visually and try to identify if there are any common design trends you might pick up on. Ask yourself if these design trends are common to a certain industry or type of brand? It's also likely that certain designed trends are common to specific target audiences.
For this task I asked two family members for a website they enjoy and I ended up with:
TryHackMe - https://tryhackme.com/
Magasinet - https://www.magasinet.no/
TryHackMe
This website is an educational site that aims to teach and allow people to practice their hacking skills in a safe and legal environment.
The website offers courses in cyber security, practice environment and a forum which allows the viewer to connect with other people. Clients are able to make an account and enroll in different courses or solve different problems related to cyber security.
The content of the website includes logo (on the top left corner), menu (in top center) and a "Login/Join now" button (on the top right corner). The designers of the site have used illustrations, icons and text together which makes the content easy to navigate and scan. They have also used a few common design trends like the size and placement of the logo and menu as well as creating a fun and modern header that includes a large font and attracts the eye.
Magasinet
This website is a E-commerce website aiming to sell outdoor gear and clothes to it's clients.
The site offers a lot of different items from popular brands as well as some articles connected to outdoor activities and advertising some of the items sold on the site.
Similar to my previous website Magasinet follows a few common design trends such as the logo and menu placement. Instead of Login/Join now button on the right corner we have the customer's shopping cart, which is very common for this type of websites. The items on the catalog are presented with a photo and a short description allowing the customer the ability to easily scan and find exactly what they are looking for. There is also an option to filter and pick between size, gender, price, brand and other to further help the customer with finding what they need.
After clicking an item you are able to see more information about it as well as "similar items", rating and comments from other people for the chosen product.
The site information is split up in to different pages allowing the customer to pick what they are looking for without being overwhelmed and that makes the page clean and easy to work with.
