Learning Task – Sketching Techniques - Loose Juice

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

The learning task this week is "You are briefed to do an illustration for fruit juice packaging (orange and banana flavor). The name of the product is: Loose Juice.

  • Draw at least 15 scamps (they can be A6 size each) of what the label will look like. Remember to include the fruit, the name of the flavor and the name of the product.

  • Choose one of your sketches and draw the label, using Adobe Illustrator. The artwork can be A6 (landscape or portrait)."

My first thought was that this is going to be a very fun task, but still a challenge.

I started by analyzing the clues I was given, which were: Loose, Juice, Orange and Banana.

Words that come on my mind when thinking about "Loose" would be: relaxed, joyful, happy, crazy, wild, weightless, released, serene.

For "Juice": Fresh, sweet, healthy, from nature, happiness, joy, nutrition.

For "Orange" : Fruit, tropical, sunny, hot, orange, tree, nature, sweet, happiness, summer, vitamin C.

For "Banana" : Fruit, palm, tropical, beach, baby food, yellow, summer, soft, healthy.

I had to come up with 15 illustrations that include the name and flavor of the juice, so I sketched the first ideas that came up on my mind.

Then proceeded with making 16 separate illustrations (one was a big fail)

I felt positive about some of them, so I decided to move to Adobe Illustrator and see how can I improve them. I also started experimenting with my digital tablet and pen while watching "Illustrator: Drawing without the Pen Tool" and came up with a lot of different typography styles. :D

You could probably see which Illustration I chose to develop. It includes an orange as the head and a banana as hair to a very relaxed and happy girl portrait. I also added very "loose" frames for the colors to better represent the name of the juice. I wanted it to look clean and simple, but still include all of the aspects of the task. I also needed to find a suitable background color, so I decided to create a very simple and faded pattern I could use.

Last I needed to do was add the "Banana and Orange" and combine all of the elements in to one Illustration. I tried different colors and couldn't decide witch one is best, so I'll show you all of them. :D

Final result:

And with a little bit of adjustments and a mockup this is how it will look as a juice package:

I also had one of my sketches as a juice package, so I decided to try and recreate this too. I used my new illustration as the logo of the package and one of my hand written juice names for the main title.

Then to take things even further, I decided to try and use a mockup as well to see how the package would look in reality. :D

I like the fresh colors of the package and I love working with actual photos, the vertical name also looks very "loose" and wild, so I'm very happy with the result. ^^
